Say goodbye to summer by attending one of these local events.
As the summer fades away, many people look to Labor Day to close out their summer with one last fun weekend event. Luckily, there are an array of events throughout the Miami Valley over the holiday weekend, with everything from a Revolutionary Era fair to a pet 5k taking place.
Pet lovers can attend the Humane Society of Greater Dayton’s Furry Skurry 5k on Saturday, Sept. 4. The event will kick off with the pet 5K and a 1-mile walk and be followed by Furry Fest, which includes a pancake breakfast and a dog bone bar. Registration required and VIPP (very important person and pet) tickets are for sale.
Those looking to have some fun and support a good cause can check out Alterfest at Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering from Sept. 3-5. All proceeds will go to the school, with live music, a corn hole tournament and more taking place throughout the weekend.
If you’re wanting to catch one last summer live music event, the City of Dayton’s Youth and Recreation Services Department is hosting the Dayton Reggae Festival on Sept. 5 at Levitt Pavilion, with live reggae music all day and multiple food and merchandise vendors to shop from.
For history enthusiasts, the Mission of the George Rogers Clark Heritage Association’s 39th Annual Fair at New Boston will take place on Sept. 4 and 5. The festival offers visitors a chance to meet historical figures from Ohio history, sample foods from the past, shop for artisanal goods and even watch a mock battle.
Parents looking for more kid-friendly activities should check out Stricker’s Grove amusement park, which is hosting a Labor Day picnic on Monday, Sept. 6. Admission includes unlimited access to the rides, mini golf and free soft drinks. Food and alcohol will be available for purchase and guests are allowed to bring their own food into the park.
Another family-friendly event parents can take advantage of is the special family-value wristband at Young’s Jersey Dairy. The wristband, good for a day’s access to all the farm’s attractions, including mini golf, driving ranges and a wagon ride, is available from Sept. 3-6.
Step back in time at the annual Ohio Renaissance Festival, which will open for its first weekend over the holiday, Sept. 4-6. Visitors are transported back to 16th Century England, where they can see a joust, shop goods from the age, ride a camel and more.
