Learn more about Dayton’s own flag

Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14. The holiday is meant to commemorate the day the United States flag was adopted, June 14, 1777.

In honor of Flag Day, we’ll tell you a little bit about the City of Dayton’s new flag!

Unveiled in December 2021, Dayton’s flag is blue and green, incorporating colors “seen throughout the Dayton region,” according to the City’s website.

Dayton, hometown of Orville and Wilbur Wright, is commonly referred to as the “birthplace of aviation.” This is alluded to in the flag with a “view of the Wright Flyer’s wings.”

The wings of the flyer are designed to represent three different aspects of Dayton. The first, green, represents the land. The second, dark blue, represents riverways. The third, light blue, represents the sky.

The five “angled stripes” are intended to represent the five rivers in the greater Dayton region.

The City of Dayton has gone through three flags since its founding. The first, adopted in 1917, featured a Wright Flyer with orange stripes on each side. The second, adopted in 1956, had a plain “Dayton” running down the left side with a Wright Flyer adjacent to it. This second flag is officially designated as “Flag Emeritus.”
