Dayton Metro Library presents a day of fun in the sun

Cold weather got you down? The Northmont Branch of the Dayton Metro Library is hosting a beach themed party, part of the Where the Wild Kids Are series of events, to bring a bit of sunshine to your dreary winter days. The event is being held in the library’s Community Room starting Jan.27 from 11-11:45 a.m.

This is the first beach party theme the branch has had for the Wild Kids series. Families will get to decorate their own beach bags while listening to summer music, read a story or two and watch a beachy cartoon. Guests are encouraged to dress in their favorite summer attire.

“The Wild Kids program began in February of 2023 to encourage school-aged children to spend time at the library by building relationships and making friends through fun activities,” says Kristi Ross, a Northmont Children’s Services librarian.

All Dayton Metro Library events and programs are free to attend. Where the Wild Kids Are-Beach Party doesn’t require prior registration and is open to children in grades K-5 to attend with a family member.

“Northmont staff love how involved their patrons get in branch programs. They are willing to try just about any theme thrown at them,” says Ross. “This particular program will provide a little mental break from the cold and snow of winter, while also fostering friendships and family time.”

This will be the first time trying out this particular theme, but each session, usually held once a month, has a different theme. Each theme mixes arts, crafts, music and pop culture to give young patrons a creative experience.

The other upcoming Wild Kids events include Winter Wonderland in February, which features snow globe making and other winter crafts; Leprechaun Traps in March, where kids can make their own leprechaun traps from scratch; and Star Wars Celebration in May, where kids can make their own cardboard lightsaber.

“My favorite part about leading a ‘Wild Kids’ session is seeing the happiness on kids’ faces as they play and learn,” says Ross.

The Northmont Branch will also host David Roz Puppetry’s The Frog Prince, a spring egg hunt, the Miami University Steel Drum Band and much more. Upcoming events can be found by visiting daytonmetrolibrary.org.
