Make the most of the end of summer—or the start of fall—with these weekend events
The temperature says summer, but the colors—and calendar—say fall. Whether you’re clinging to the summer weather or ready to embrace the autumn, there’s an event near Dayton this weekend to suit the season.
Apple Picking at Peifer Orchard
There are several options for a pick-your-own excursion in the Miami Valley, but our favorite for apples has always been Peifer Orchard. Check the orchard’s website for frequent updates on apple varieties available for picking—and don’t forget to have a pie recipe locked and loaded for after your apple-picking adventure.
Halloween Haunt at Kings Island
The water park may be closed at Kings Island, but the scares are just beginning. The park’s Halloween Haunt is open Fridays, Saturdays and select Sundays through Oct. 28 for an extra-scary amusement park experience. Visit the transformed park for the Halloween mazes, scare actors and night rides that caused Halloween Haunt to be voted USA Today’s “Best Theme Park Halloween Event” last year!

Four weeks into its two-month run, the Ohio Renaissance Festival is going strong. Visit Waynesville for jousting, minstrelry and a historically good time. This weekend will have a special steampunk twist—Time Travelers Weekend.
