Historic sites across the Miami Valley open for free tours, scavenger hunts and behind-the-scenes visits Sept. 10-20

Ohio History Connection invites Ohioans to rediscover their history Sept. 10-20 with the return of the annual Ohio Opens Doors event. 

Started in 2016, to promote and inspire pride in Ohio’s past and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lyndon B. Johnson’s signing of the National Historic Preservation Act, Ohio Opens Doors invites to explore Ohio’s historic sites. This might mean a normally closed site opens for a day or a behind-the-scenes tour—it varies from site to site. 

“Ohio Open Doors events highlight landmarks right in our backyards, sharing the history and unique nature of these historic places,” said Diana Welling, state historic preservation officer and director of the Ohio History Connection’s State Historic Preservation Office, in a press release. 

In the Miami Valley, these events include: 

– a free guided tour of the Dayton Women’s Club on Sept. 13, 

– a behind-the-scenes collections tour of the Heritage Center of Clark County Sept. 16-17, 

– a downtown Dayton historic walking tour on Sept. 18, 

– an open house and tour of Xenia’s historic Eavey Building Sept. 12-13, 

– a scavenger hunt with the Miamisburg Historical Society on Sept. 19,  

– free guided tours of the Dayton Arcade on Sept. 10 

– and many more.
