 Live Well Dayton: Aging

Dr. Rob Kominiarek optimizes healthy aging his ReNue Health facility.

Health and wellness are subjects that are very much on the minds of many Americans these days. With their near-constant presence on the nightly news, the nation’s medical, pharmaceutical and insurance industries dominate our conversations and demand the attention of both citizens and their elected officials as millions begin to feel the squeeze from the ever-rising cost of health care in this country.

And make no mistake, our nation is aging rapidly. According to statistics from the Population Reference Bureau, the vast baby-boom generation is now at or near retirement age. It is estimated that the number of Americans aged 65 and older will more than double from 46 million today to over 98 million by 2060, and the 65-and-older age group’s share of the total population will rise from 15 percent to nearly 24 percent. With that older population comes an increased concern, not merely over the cost of health care, but over the broader subject of how to maintain our individual health and wellness more effectively.

And that’s where ReNue Health and its medical director, Dr. Rob Kominiarek, come in. “Our practice focuses on health and wellness,” says Kominiarek, widely known as “America’s Fitness Doctor.” “Most everything we do is related to slowing the process of aging so it involves instituting healthy lifestyle habits such as healthy eating, Mediterranean diet, regular exercise, avoiding processed foods, drinking less soda, drinking more water and then using hormones as clinically indicated to improve the client’s health and wellness.”

Research published in the American Medical Association’s JAMA Internal Medicine compared the health of the baby-boom generation to that of its predecessors and found that despite a longer life expectancy boomers can expect to exhibit markedly higher rates of hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. These findings “support an increased likelihood for continued rising health care costs and a need for increased numbers of health professionals as baby boomers age,” the authors of the study wrote. “Given the link between positive healthy lifestyles and subsequent health in this age group, the study demonstrates a clear need for policies that expand efforts at prevention and healthy lifestyle promotion in the baby-boomer generation.”

ReNue Health is located in Springboro and Kominiarek—“Dr. Rob” to his clients—and his staff use some of the most advanced and comprehensive medical services available today to help clients retain their grip on health and vitality. ReNue Health specializes in precision functional medicine, where the emphasis is placed on each individual client and his or her own unique needs through the process of mapping the client’s body, understanding the individual’s unique genetics by collecting personal health biometrics and then combining those with lab results to focus on enhancing the client’s quality of life.

Kominiarek’s unique approach to medicine and health care, combined with his enthusiasm for helping his patients, has earned his practice a rapidly growing list of clients. Since opening in July 2013, ReNue Health has seen a steady influx of patients who seek out and take advantage of Kominiarek’s expertise to treat a wide range of illnesses and conditions.

“Here at ReNue Health we do a lot of regenerative procedures, as well,” says Kominiarek, a licensed provider of the trademarked Vampire procedures and the GAINSWave procedure, which uses pulsating acoustic shockwaves to stimulate the growth of new blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow and improving sexual function. “We utilize PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, therapy in which we use platelets for issues such as aging in the face. We also do PRP face lifts, breast lifts, we do priapic shock to treat erectile dysfunction, which is PRP injected directly into the penis. We do PRP shots, what we call the ‘O shots’, to help alleviate urinary stress incontinence in women and this can also help with sexual function. We also do low-intensity extracorporeal shock wave therapy to help with erectile dysfunction. So just about anything related to helping improve the aging process. What we’re trying to do is help people stay ahead of the curve.”

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a concentrate of platelet-rich plasma protein derived from whole blood that has been put through a centrifuge to remove the red blood cells. It has a greater concentration of growth factors than whole blood and has been used to encourage a brisk healing response by several specialties, in particular dentistry, orthopedics and dermatology. PRP contains several different growth factors and it is believed that PRP may also stimulate the healing of soft tissue and joints. Main indications in dermatology for PRP are androgenic alopecia, wound healing and skin rejuvenation.

Kominiarek is a board-certified fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, with advanced certification in age management medicine and bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. He is a graduate of the Nova-Southeastern University, College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He completed his residency training at Ohio University and Grandview Hospital and Medical Center in Dayton. A veteran of the U.S. Army and a best-selling author, Kominiarek can be seen on his weekly health segment “Dr. Rob In The House” on WDTN’s Living Dayton show, every Wednesday at noon.

“Optimum health is no accident,” says Kominiarek. “It is the reward for taking a preventative and proactive approach towards your personal health. We at ReNue Health have assembled some of the most advanced, comprehensive services available today and a responsive, dedicated staff who understand your goals and needs. You deserve nothing less. I have no financial conflicts of interest or ties to any pharmaceutical company. My only objective is determining the most effective, safest therapy for my patients. My mission is to engage my patients in the active pursuit of optimal health and to provide personalized superior care with an emphasis on preventive medicine, hormone optimization and healthy aging.”

If retaining or regaining good health is a priority in your life—and if it isn’t, perhaps it should be—then ReNue Health may be a practice worth looking into.
